Mecca incident leaves 32 Iranians injured, one dead

MECCA, Sep. 12 (MNA) – One Iranian pilgrim lost his life and 32 others suffered injuries in the deadly crane collapse occurred in Mecca Friday afternoon.

The Head of Hajj and Pilgrimage Medical Center of the Iranian Red Crescent Society Seyed Ali Mar'ashi announced the latest news underlining that the injured Iranian pilgrims are hospitalized in Mecca.

The incident happened after a towering construction crane toppled over around 17 local time on Friday afternoon, amid strong winds and storm in the holy city of Mecca, crashing into the Grand Mosque ahead of the start of the annual Hajj pilgrimage later this month.

According to international dispatches, 107 people have been killed and more than 230 injured in the incident so far.

In a Saturday statement, Iran’s Health Ministry expressed its readiness to dispatch expert medical teams to Saudi Arabia to treat those injured in the incident in the Saudi holy city of Mecca. The ministry is also ready to provide treatment for the injured from other countries such as India, Pakistan and Indonesia in Iran, the statement added.
